This ethnographic research investigates the interplay between analog and digital dating practices, focusing on how individuals from three distinct age groups (20-40, 40-60 and over 60) socialize and form connections in a world increasingly mediated by technology. Drawing on Callon’s methodology, this study employs an actor-network theory framework to analyze how both human and non-human actors (such as digital platforms, dating apps and societal norms) actively shape dating practices. The research is based on interviews to accommodate a diverse age group and ensure more natural, sincere responses. The findings reveal generational divides in preferences, with younger participants gravitating towards digital platforms like Tinder, Bumble, and Instagram for their convenience and perceived safety, while older participants emphasize the authenticity and depth of face-to-face interactions. Despite the convenience of digital dating, issues such as privacy concerns, mismatched expectations, and the superficiality of online connections were commonly raised. The study highlights the dynamic nature of dating in the digital age, where technological tools not only enable but also constrain the types of relationships formed. Through Callon’s framework, the research illuminates how dating practices are co-constructed by the active agency of both people and technologies they engage with, illustrating the complex networks that shape modern socializing behaviors. This approach contributes to a deeper understanding of the evolving nature of intimacy and socialization in both digital and physical realms.
